IBM Stock Rises 1.93% on Quantum Cooling Milestone; Starling Push for 2029 on Track
International Business Machines Corp. shares climbed 1.93% to $237.16 as the company announced a breakthrough in its quantum computing roadmap. The recovery from intraday lows near $231.00 reflected investor confidence in the firm’s ability to scale fault-tolerant systems.
IBM successfully connected and cooled two cryogenic modules sharing a single ultra-cold environment. Each module stands over eight feet tall and eight feet wide. The system reached four Kelvin in under five days during initial tests, then dropped below 15 millikelvin. This design supports hundreds of connected chips with significantly more wiring capacity than existing IBM quantum systems.
The milestone advances the company’s plan to deliver at least 1,000 programmable qubits in a scalable system by 2027, with Quantum Starling—a commercial fault-tolerant quantum platform—targeted for 2029. The cryogenic architecture is a critical enabler for modular quantum processors that can operate at scale.
While the news is specific to IBM’s hardware progress, the broader implication for the cryptocurrency sector lies in quantum computing’s potential to disrupt cryptographic security. Bitcoin and other proof-of-work networks rely on elliptic curve cryptography, which could be vulnerable to sufficiently advanced quantum attacks. However, IBM’s timeline of 2029 for fault-tolerant systems leaves ample room for the crypto industry to adopt quantum-resistant algorithms.
